Firm Description

Firm Credentials

Metis Advisory Group, Ltd. was established in 1984 as a specialized health care facility programming and planning consulting firm. The firm was founded with the philosophy that it is possible to combine technical excellence in specialized facility planning with an uncompromising commitment to the client’s business objectives. Over the past nearly twenty years, the three principals at Metis have developed a national and international practice with a core staff of eight junior and senior consultants and is therefore one of the largest independent firms in the United States wholly dedicated to health care facilities programming and planning.

Metis Advisory Group, Ltd. has performed facilities programming and planning services for healthcare projects with construction costs of over $2 billion. Clients range from rural community hospitals to urban academic medical centers, single-facility hospitals to multi-campus systems, and physicians’ office practices to comprehensive ambulatory diagnostic and treatment centers. Recent engagements have focused on planning for institutional mergers, restructuring for patient-centered care, and repositioning for managed care.

Our Principals and Staff

The principals and senior consultants at Metis all have professional training in business, health care management and health care architecture combined with previous work experience for providers. They regularly make presentations at national and international professional society meetings and publish articles in professional journals and manuals dedicated to health care management and facilities planning. The firm sponsors professional development through the voluntary contribution of principal time to graduate level teaching in health administration, leadership roles in professional organizations, as well as employee attendance at professional society meetings.

Excellence in health care facility planning is achieved through the combined application of technical expertise in architectural programming and project definition and on-the-job experience in the organization and running of projects. Successful projects are the product of achieving a creative balance in responding to the many clinical and business management considerations placed upon the allocation of space.

We approach each client engagement proactively by taking a leading role in organizing both the process for our scope of work and the analytical framework for decision making. Our programming and planning recommendations derive from a rigorous analysis of all pertinent data that is the foundation for a thorough and insightful assessment of the key issues and challenges facing our clients. Where needed, we use advanced computer simulation modeling to test alternative workflow designs.

The firm’s staff has memberships in the American College of Health Care Executives, the American Institute of Architects, Academy of Healthcare Design, the American Society of Hospital Engineers (a division of the American Hospital Association) and the American Association of Healthcare Consultants.

Practice Focus

Our practice is devoted to anticipating and addressing the effects of current and future changes in healthcare delivery. With increasing pressure to conserve resources, facilities must be dedicated to being patient-oriented while achieving increasing levels of operational efficiency. Due to the inherent time demands of construction, management requires facilities planning advice that anticipates alternative levels and kinds of needs in both clinical and support functions. In our assignments, we seek to translate the technical requirements of project planning and delivery into the realities of our clients’ business plans.

The rapidly changing healthcare environment demands increasing flexibility in the role played by facilities and equipment in responding to these changes. Through effective planning, Metis Advisory Group, Ltd. transforms the complexities of strategic and operational needs into viable facility responses.
